What exactly is forensic accounting? In the purest sense it is taking a large jigsaw puzzle, finding the pieces, which are often hidden, and putting those same pieces together in a coherent, organized manner. The puzzle is financial and each piece is relevant in a larger financial picture. The overall result could be for: (a) civil or criminal litigation, (b) damages calculations and mitigation, (c) reconstruction of financial records after property loss, (d) fraud investigation, (e) asset-tracing, (f) business valuation, (g) historical research, or a purpose that is unique to the report user. The common element is this - at the start of the engagement no one knows what the picture is, and no one knows where all the pieces are. As such the forensic accountant is faced with unique financial, legal, and technological challenges.

To be a good forensic accountant you not only have to have specialized training in accounting and auditing, but a solid-core of fraud investigations, superior communications skills, specialized industry knowledge, legal knowledge, and in today's world - digital forensics.

Repeat of the 80's - where we are now....

The unfortunate truth is that many companies are sliding toward a financial abyss at present. It's difficult not to experience that when your revenue stream is energy-driven. We understand that and our professional services in litigation support and forensic accounting mirror that. Much of our experience evolved from the "firestorm" that came out of the 1980's - the collapse of oil and gas, commercial real estate development disasters, savings and loan frauds, and commercial bank failures. We learned those things that you can't get from books in a veritable sea of Chapter 11 and 7 filings, work-outs, bank failures, near-failures, and scores of businesses that were set adrift by lenders. We found the pieces then and we continue to work in a focused, diligent manner to find the pieces now.  Along the way we turned solid backgrounds in oil and gas services, manufacturing, real estate, and nonprofit organizations into litigation support, digital forensics, and forensic accounting. We added other industries - labor organizations, millworks, oil and gas drilling, employee benefit plans, real estate development, and governmental entities. What was the common thread? Often it was FAW - (fraud, abuse, and waste) which was mirrored and amplified by managers and business owners that were desperate to hold on to their piece of the pie.

So where are we today? Always ready to work with attorneys and business owners who have unique accounting and legal issues. We understand the risks - legal, personal, and business. We operate in a high-risk environment that demands experience and technical knowledge that has been gained "in the trenches", not by imitation. Call us with your "UNIQUE PROBLEM" at (281) 923-9853 and let us help you.
